Educating for a Better World
Tending the Children
My work as an educator is about tending the inner flame:
Looking deeply for that spark of life
Seeing in to the gifts that each person brings
Helping parents to trust their instincts when they know
they need to do something different for their children
Helping students stay true to that inner voice
Providing safe space for those who are different
An incubator for young activists, poets, artists, healers
so many unique and beautiful young people
trying to find their way...
Who are you? What calls to you? What makes you feel most alive?
Tending the Earth
Education is key to social change: How would the world be different if people learned from a very young age to appreciate and respect other cultures, the other beings we share our Earth with, and the Earth herself? How would it be if people fully understood the deep links between corporations, militarism, and the mainstream media? If people grew up learning how deeply our lives and actions are all intertwined? If they had more role models: if they knew how many people and organizations are out there every day putting their hearts and souls into creating a better world?
Global Village School
I am the founding director and Chief Visionary Officer of Global Village School, an international K-12 homeschool diploma program focused on peace, justice, diversity, and sustainability. Launched at the turn of the millennium in 1999, Global Village works to effect change on the personal and global levels by providing a transformative education that empowers students to cultivate their gifts and passions while becoming wise and capable stewards of the planet and each other. We have created a vibrant international community of youth and adults around the globe.
Writing, Presentations, Press
Writing is another way that I express my vision of what a better world could look like. I have written a substantial amount of curriculum as well as articles on a range of topics such as education, activism, and spirituality.
In my more extroverted days I gave numerous presentations on peace education, homeschooling, learning styles, and educating for a better world in the US and internationally. Some of the venues included the Association for Global New Thought, Soka University, the International Democratic Education Conference, AERO National Alternative Education Conference, International Montessori Foundation, National Coalition of Alternative Community Schools, StarChild Network, Earth Charter International, and the Network of Spiritual Progressives.
I am grateful that a number of people and organizations have taken an interest in this work over the years, such as New Horizons for Learning, the Institute for Humane Education, KPFK Pacifica Radio, HUB (Humanity Unites Brilliance) E-Academy, KVTA radio, the StarChild Network, Conscious Consumer Network, The Ojai Valley News, and the Ojai Bubble.
I have been working in alternative education for over 30 years and have a Masters Degree in Education (Curriculum and Instruction), a B.A. in Wilderness Recreation, and a California Teaching Credential. I also completed a year's graduate study in Depth Psychology and studied dream tending at Pacifica Graduate Institute. And of course there's all the learning that life itself brings...
